We are the 99 Percent.
When I saw the picture I couldn't help but notice all of the different positions that it can be interpreted to represent and wonder if the person who took this picture didn't mean for it to include all of the other protesters or if they wanted to show not only the police grabbing someone, but also how everyone else there was taking pictures of what the police were doing. One of the main issues that is being fought over when it comes to this protest is that the media isn't covering how much police brutality is happening, including the police taking away the protestors civil rights. I can't speak as to if that is actually happening, however it appears that the police man is reaching over the the division of what is a persons right and trying to drag them onto the other side. Once that person is on the other side of that red sheet they are no longer a civilian, but a prisoner and they lose certain civil liberties and the protestor is trying to stay on the civilian side. This picture also captures that almost every protestor now has a camera and will be constantly recording the police, making sure to point out any injustice. This shows a clash between the classes. The police are the upright, outstanding citizens that is what all of our docile bodies should be doing. The protestors are the lower class, they are not dressed up like the cops, not official, just unknown protestors that the media says don't really know what their position except "Wall Street Greed". That red sheet is a perfect barrier between the classes of normal people doing their job, and the underclass of unemployed people on the street that need to be kept in order by the government and normal society. This picture also shows a new advantage of how the protestors are fighting against the police since everyone has a camera now, and clearly in this picture, even a small one person scuffle is caught on camera by multiple people. This picture does appear to be fairly bias against the cops however, which isn't a surprise since it was taken from the other side of the red sheet, since this picture shows the protestors hair being pulled by the police in a rather violent way. That being said, I don't think that this picture in any way incriminates the police officer since it is unknown what the person had to do to be treated like that.
I like your analysis of the picture! I'm not too familiar with the Occupy Wall Street protests but I do think that there have been an increasing amount of media in favor of the protesters. It does seem that the implication is that police brutality in rising in response to the protest. I think you raise a good question about the viewpoint each of these photos is taken from. I mean even in the photo you selected there is a protester taking a photo.
