Is today’s society sexist? No matter if you like it, I would say yes. Taking a look at these two photos, do we see anything sporty in them? You probably say yes. These two women look so thing and nice because they exercise a lot. However, judging from the magazine’s name, Sports Illustrated, is this what is supposed to be illustrated by it? What we are expecting from this magazine should be sports news and sweaty men. However, the magazine is using sexy women as a selling point. Sports are supposed to give people a feeling of power and energy. However, these photos show the opposite. The girls in these to pictures look helpless and they are transmitting a signal of lack of power to attract men to look at them because society deems lack of power of women is the beauty of women. It seems to me that in this society, the standard for being sporty is different for men and women.
These pictures give a great example of gendered body. If women are thing and have big breasts, they illustrated sports. On the other hand, men are supposed to muscular to be illustrative of sports. Once I heard a guy saying I want to look good, so I have to go to the gym. Interestingly, my girlfriend was on diet because she wanted to look good until I convinced her that she looked good and diet was a bad way to lose weight. This interesting story just proves the social bias towards men and women.
Another example that demonstrates this double standard is that women are supposed to wear less clothing to be beautiful, but men should wear a suit that covers most of the body. When did we ever see a magazine with a man showing his chest and thighs? I guess this is what is defined to be gendered body.
