The Moment I Knew I was going to be a Psych Major

When I became an upperclassmen in high school, I really started to think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and what I wanted to major in when I got to college. When I was younger I really wanted to be a lawyer. I didn't really know why, but I just wanted a prestigious career. I hadn't really put much thought into what I wanted to be until junior year when everyone started to prepare for the ACTs and apply to colleges.
During my junior year, I took class called Psychology through Literature. The title of the class is pretty self explanatory; we analyzed literature through psychological lenses. The first book we read was "Lord of the Flies." I didn't really enjoy the novel, until we started learning about Sigmund Freud's theories. We analyzed the book after learning about Freud, and I was suddenly super into that class. His psychological theories, along with the other famous psychologists we learned about, really sparked an interest in me and I wanted to know and learn more about psychology and how the human mind works. Learning about how different psychologists thought the mind was made up and worked really was really fascinating. Psych through Lit was especially fun because of the teacher that taught it. Ms. Hallberg designed the course so it was fun, engaging, but at the same time really made us think and piece together ideas. I really learned a lot about psychology by the end of that course.
The following summer, one of my friends and I enrolled in a summer psychology class at a small college close to my hometown. I know it sounds really nerdy that I voluntarily chose to take a class in the summer, but I LOVED it. We got to learn more about the different approaches to psychology. My senior year of high school, I ended up taking AP Psychology, which I really enjoyed as well. By the end of my senior year, I was definite that I was going to college to pursue a career psychology. I have never been more passionate than this about any particular subject. I can honestly say that taking Psychology through Literature my junior year of high school changed my life and set my path for what I want to do in life.
