Every time I see this commercial or any of the other Toyota Venza commericals it always make me laugh. This is the Toyota Venza Car Commercial in which the parents are taking their car to go biking somewhere. And their daughter is talking about how she "read" a study of older people becoming antisocial so she forced her parents to get a Facebook, but they only have 19 friends and she has over 600 friends, and is therefore living a life while they are not. This commercial is poking fun at kids who live their lives on Facebook and consider it as being social, while her, or their parents are out bike riding, talking to people face to face, being social and living their lives somewhere outside of their house. In the commercial they are targeting adults who are old enough to have or do have teenagers, and the type of people who want to get up and do something and live their life. The signifier is the car, and it signifies that it can take you where you want to go, it cen let you live your life. It can take you to go bike riding, moutain climbing, out with friends, and this this is the car that will let you and take you to do all of this.
When I watched this, I didn't even care about the car, I just laughed at the attack on facebook and social networking. While it may have failed as an advertisement for me, it was still great to read closely. That girl's life was so boring looking. And there is a serious problem with some kids these days who don't know how to communicate without the internet as a shield. Despite the commercial poking fun at the subject, it truly is a serious issue.
