Clash Of The Titans Teaser Trailer

I personally find movie trailers absolutely fantastic. Really, movie trailers are my favorite part of the whole 'going to the movies' experience. I decided to "read" the teaser for Clash of the Titans. First of all, it amazes me how movie trailers can change your emotions so fast. For example, during/after watching this trailer I just feel a massive kick of adrenaline, like I want to go kick a monsters ass or something. (while wearing awesome ancient greek armor of course) So why do I feel like that? There is a lot going on in this trailer that we can read. From hard guitar music, (shout out: The Bird and The Worm - The Used) to the usual projection of man and woman in war movies like this one. The main character in the trailer is very strong, and attractive, and even in this short of a clip there are a lot of quick clips of him doing masculine and heroic things. He swings around his sword as if, 'ready for action', he is leaping off of cliffs at deadly heights, he survives after being in the clenches of a giant scorpion, etc. these are all just conventions of what a "man" is. He is strong, he is attractive, he is fearless, he is dirty and war-worn, he is wearing armor, he is running with a woman he more than likely just rescued. In rhetoric, every image is an argument, and in this trailer I think they are arguing that this "image" of the main character is what a man IS. They do this by adding the bad ass rock music, showing how fearless he is, (leaping over deathly high caverns etc.) showing massive monsters he will brave to fight against solo if he has to. I really believe that the music plays a key role in our reaction to the video, and it aligns perfectly with the gladiator/warrior/fighter/godly image they are trying to project. Culture also plays a huge role in how we interpret people and objects. In regards to this video, we react the way we do because we have been raised in a world where a REAL man is strong and brave and all the other sort of 'stereotypes' we have towards men. On the other hand, how we view women due to our culture is very different. In line with what a 'male' should be, the way women are projected in the trailer is very curious. Signs: Man = armor, dirty, ruggedly handsome. Woman = long flowing hair, beautiful gowns, stunningly beautiful, total damsel. The few shots in the trailer where we actually see women are when they are either running from the bad guys, or strung up as Kraken bait in white evening robes. But because of our culture, and thanks to Disney of course, women have most always been, "the damsel in distress". Of course now that is all changing, but it is very interesting how everything from the clothes these characters wear, to the color of their hair, to how attractive they are- all the things right up front that we often think we ignore or overlook- these are the little things that all come together to create these cultural links.
