I chose the scene in the movie Crazy Stupid Love where the young girl in the movie breaks up with her boyfriend and spontaneously runs (in the rain) and kisses the tomcat in the movie (guy who gets laid by every chick he hits on). This specific scene is where the young girl (Emma Stone) is nervously asking the tomcat (Ryan Gosling) what his "Big Plan" was (inquiring what was his big move that he got all the girls with so they would sleep with him.) He replied by explaining how he plays the famously known dirty dancing song "Time of my life" and lifts his female acquaintance up in the air like Patrick Swayze did to Jennifer Grey in the movie Dirty Dancing

I suppose this scene is more specifically lustful but I think it represents a sector of romance in action (both of the scenes do.) There is a lot of romance in action that is going one; specifically the girl goes for the bad boy, she dumps her plain ordinary boyfriend for something spontaneous and crazy. She runs through the rain, this is like the epitome of all romantic gestures it heightens the drama and gives the image of desperation and urgency for love, lust, and romance. Then there is the "big gesture" idea, there is always a big gesture that comes from the guy that makes the girl always fall for the guy in movies like this. In this case the tomcat of the movie steals the big gesture from another movie (dirty dancing.) His romantic gesture solidifies the idea that "hot men" can get any girl they want in the bedroom. It also solidifies the idea that "hot men" are wealthy and live luxurious lifestyles with only a materialistic mindset (based on the setting of this scene, and previous to this scene his clothing and lifestyle.) The end of the movie is important to note related to this scene, this romantic gesture led to the tomcat falling in love with the girl and then he completely changed his ways and was only devoted to her. This is how practically every love story is set, it is typically a bad boy that a good girl changes and then they fall in love and it is perfect because the guy at the last moment made a grand gesture that made the girl think I changed him and he only loves me. Which is pretty unrealistic but makes for good entertainment. From this moive the audience takes away multiple messages: 1. If a guy is good looking, he is probably rich, and can sleep with any girl he wants. 2. Good girls prefer bad boys 3. Girls can change boys and 4. There is always a grand gesture when it comes to romance.
This movie took some crazy turns but the romanticism was oh so evident. The entire thing is about finding the right one through something a little drastic and somewhat unreal. This pushes more towards the fantasy part of being romantic because it seems so unreal for it to truly happen this way.
ReplyDeleteI just watched this movie and had considered choosing a scene from it. I think the way romance is created in this movie is the way it always is in movies there is rain involved and some crazy spontaneous gesture after that. I think it is interesting later in the movie where they talk about the R rated and PG rated version of their nights. In the end the two don't end up sleeping together and end up talking the night away (PG).. how romantic right. This is letting girls get the idea that guys are interested in not just sleeping with them but in them as well, this is the romance in the movie.
