The scene I chose to analyze is the scene of the first day in Avatar body for Jake. This scene did a pretty good job at making me feel curious about what is going to happen and I can feel that my heart is pounding because of my wonderment about the process of putting someone in another’s body is mysterious to me. I don’t know what to say here but it makes me feel like watching a medical research and makes me wonder what if the process fails, and what’s going to happen to the experiment subject. It’s a complex feeling, which is all I can say now.
Signifiers to me in this scene include many different things. Examples are the masks put on those personnel and the equipment. The computer screens and brain scan image especially make me feel strange and sort of intimidated. The setup of the rooms is also technologically advanced and makes me feel a bit nervy. I personally think the setup of this scene is to make viewers feel the power of the human being conquering Avatar. High end technology is used in this scene to convey that message.
I believe this scene is aimed to make people feel how defensiveless Avatar is compared with human beings in the movie. The technology that human possesses and they way human can see through biological objects make me feel that the other side of the story is in a real bad position. When Jake was running outside, he bumped into a robot controlled by a human. This could also serve as a piece of evidence to demonstrate how humans are offensive to Avatar.
From this scene I noticed that right when Jake wakes up in his new body he is laying there with wires attached all over and he looks big, but not that big. All of a sudden as he tries to sit and stand up he continuously grows and grows and viewers finally see how big he is compared to the scientists in the room and their equipment. He then looks like a child first learning to walk as he is learning how to maneuver and function in his Avatar body.
ReplyDeleteAll the beeping noises of the machines make me feel like I am actually right there is a surgery room or doctors office. If I were to wake up with wires attached all over, I would be a little confused and out of sorts as well.
I too chose this scene because I think this is an important moment for Jake. He finally gets the opportunity to get out of that wheelchair and be free and the doctors did all they could to try and keep him down. I feel like it is almost a metaphor for the entire movie because the humans want to get rid of the Na'vi culture and in essence, keep them down. And then, much like the rest of the movie, Jake gets away from them and runs off in his Avatar body leaving the humans behind and unable to reach him. Although I agree, the humans come off as extremely advanced and high tech, giving the impression that they are better and maybe even smarter but Jake isn't too concerned.
