The Idea of Being Tan

One body practice of our culture now-a-days is the idea that being tan means being beautiful and healthy. Every girl competes with one another to see who is darker in skin tone, yet any tone of skin should be appreciated. Females have the idea that pale looking skin signifies a image of ugliness and being sick. Darker skin tone represents a healthy woman. Americans do not take into account that natural skin should be valued. In other foreign countries, for example China, woman with whiter skin means wealth. Pale skinned Chinese woman are rich because they don't go outside as often as the darker skinned Chinese woman, who works in the rice field because they are poor and need to earn money.
American girls are also influenced by the media to have pale skin. One never sees an American celebrity's intelligible body to be a pale skin tone. Our nation believes the reverse of other nation and support the idea that being tan means being wealthy and healthy. It also believes that pale skin means being indoors too much and the tan skin tone means going out. America's culture is to get as much outdoor as possible which means being more fun and having more experience and time to enjoy life, which further means that because one has time on their hand, they don't need to work as much and are already rich. Many Americans either tan on the beach to get their looks or go to a spa or, as convenient and affordable as it get now, go and buy self tan spray. Therefore, being pale becomes a subconscious body practice for females within the United States. American girls are adapted to getting tan skin though it is unhealthy for them to use the method they use to achieve it, which completely contradicts the image that tan toned skin portrays, which is being healthy.

  1. I completely agree with this, and in the media you will often hear things like she has a
"healthy glow" meaning she looks tan or that she look like she was just on the beach. I also think it's very interesting how something that can be extremely unhealthy; because getting a tan is notalways the best thing for your skin, is a widely accepted beauty tool.

  2. Just like Robin said in class, in other countries people are dying their skin to be whiter, and reducing their breast size because their perception is much different than our own. Even for our culture, a long time ago the paler you were meant the more beautiful you were. Thinking back, women used to pluck the hairs on their hairline because having a large forehead was desired...so it seems like these sort of docile bodies, and practices to "fit in" have been going on forever... it's weird to think how and where these cultural practices come about in the first place.
