A common body practice, especially for white women, is going through some type of dieting. I say white women because when I was watching tv today, most of the commercials and adds about losing weight all had white models. It seems that we are socially constructed to believe dieting is to become as thin and slim as possible. I then thought about people who are still considered beautiful in our society. For example, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are two very curvy, not white women. Jennifer Lopez was also voted the most beautiful woman of 2011 by People Magazine. The point here is that a lot of American women are dieting to become slim because most of the advertisements we are used to seeing involve becoming the skinniest person possible. America needs to realize that being that skinny is not always beautiful, even though the praxis of dieting is a common body practice in today's society

I personally think this dieting thing is kind of pathetic. I mean it's reasonable to want to look pretty, however, sacrificing health in order to have an abnormally beautiful body is simply pathetic. Being healthy is the most beautiful thing.
ReplyDeleteI think women feel as though they are judged everyday by the clothes they wear, how their hair is done, and of course, how skinny/curvy one is. Women are not only influenced by the media, but also by what is seen is economically powerful. Every individual is positioned in culture to want to be in a high class. By looking 'the part' one can appeal to more individuals and be seen as having more authority. I do think that more women need to learn how to embrace curves. In every race/culture there are plenty of self-conscious women. All women equally need to know that it is not necessarily your body type, but the way you carry yourself that makes an impression and changes someones view on you.
